Infrared sauna listings use a vocabulary of wavelengths and emitter names. This guide translates it, without claiming health benefits that the evidence doesn't support.

How infrared heating works

Infrared is electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light. Panels emit it, and it warms surfaces — including skin — directly rather than primarily through air.

The three bands used in saunas are far, mid and near infrared, with different wavelengths.

Far-infrared technology

Far-infrared panels are the most common in home saunas. Carbon or ceramic emitters are used, often in larger panels mounted at the back and sides.

Near-infrared technology

Near-infrared is produced by short-wave lamps, often at the top of the cabin or in a front-facing panel. Some cabins describe these as 'LED near infrared' or 'short-wave' emitters.

Mid-infrared technology

Mid-infrared emitters sit between the two. Not all cabins include them explicitly, and some manufacturers use 'full spectrum' to mean far + near rather than all three.

Full-spectrum heating

Full-spectrum cabins combine emitters so the body receives a mix of wavelengths. Typically this means far-infrared panels plus near-infrared lamps.

Emitter types

EmitterTypical use

Temperature and heating characteristics

More emitters can heat a cabin faster and may allow slightly higher air temperatures, but the key variable is total emitter power. Compare rated watts rather than emitter counts.

Manufacturer terminology

Terms vary: 'Low EMF', 'Ultra Low EMF', 'Spectrum', 'PureTech' and so on are marketing names for specific emitter designs. Specs — wattage and emitter type — are comparable; names aren't.

Electrical considerations

More emitters generally means more power draw. Some full-spectrum cabins need a 20A circuit or 240V; others remain on a standard 120V supply. Check the model's spec.

Product features

Full-spectrum cabins often include extra features — chromotherapy lighting, Bluetooth audio, red-light panels. Far-infrared cabins range from basic to well-equipped.

Pricing differences

Full-spectrum cabins typically cost more than comparable far-infrared models because of the extra emitters and features. In our catalog, the far-infrared Lugano is $2,699 while the full-spectrum FD-1 is $4,695.

Which technology may suit different preferences

  • Budget and simplicity: far-infrared.
  • More emitters and features: full-spectrum.
  • Both experiences in one room: a hybrid like the FD-4 Trinity.

A note on health claims

Claims that one infrared wavelength delivers superior medical outcomes are not supported by strong evidence in this context. Choose based on comfort, power and features rather than health claims.

Frequently asked questions

Is full-spectrum better than far-infrared?+

Not inherently. Full-spectrum adds near-infrared emitters and often extra features; whether that suits you depends on preference and budget.

Does full-spectrum heat faster?+

Often, because there are more emitters drawing more power — but this depends on total rated watts, not the label.

Do I need a dedicated circuit for full-spectrum?+

Some larger units do; many still run on standard household power. Check the manufacturer's specification.
