Traditional wooden sauna with a stone heater and benches
Buying guide & comparison

Best Traditional Home Saunas

Discover traditional electric and wood-burning saunas designed for authentic high-temperature sauna experiences.

What to know first

Traditional saunas heat the air to high temperatures and create real steam when you ladle water over the stones. Electric heaters are the practical choice for most homes; wood-burning heaters suit outdoor cabins with the space and chimney to support them. Here's how the options compare and what to plan for.

Traditional Sauna Buying Guide

The classic Finnish lounging experience — here's what changes the decision.

01

Electric vs. wood-burning heaters

Electric heaters are simple to operate, easy to control and the default in most homes. Wood-burning heaters deliver a distinctive dry heat and a genuine fire, but require a chimney, fire clearance, a fuel supply and more involved installation — they're best suited to outdoor cabins.

02

Temperature ranges

Traditional saunas typically operate at 160–195°F at bench level, with humidity raised by throwing water on the stones. The heat experience depends as much on humidity and ventilation as on the thermostat setting.

03

Ventilation requirements

Fresh-air intake low near the heater and an exhaust outlet higher up (or a mechanical vent) help keep the air fresh and comfortable. Good ventilation also protects the wood and the building long-term.

04

Heater sizing

Heaters are rated for a cabin's cubic volume — an undersized heater will struggle to reach temperature, and an oversized one can overshoot. Compare the manufacturer's recommended volume range with your cabin's actual volume, and factor in glass surfaces, which lose heat.

05

Electrical requirements

Electric heaters almost always need a dedicated 240V circuit sized to the heater's wattage and breaker requirement. Verify with the heater spec sheet and plan for an electrician; this is the most common overlooked cost.

06

Indoor installation

Traditional cabins need more space and clearance around the heater, plus a heat- and moisture-tolerant room. Check ceiling height, fire clearances and floor protection with the manufacturer.

Frequently asked

Is a traditional sauna better than an infrared sauna?+

Not inherently — they provide different experiences. Traditional saunas deliver higher air temperature and steam; infrared saunas warm up faster and generally need less power. Choose by which experience you want.

How much power does an electric sauna heater need?+

It varies by heater size, but smaller residential heaters are commonly in the 4.5–6 kW range, which typically needs a dedicated 240V circuit. Confirm the exact figure on the heater's specification sheet.

Can I install a wood-burning sauna in my house?+

It's uncommon — fire clearances, chimneys and local code requirements make indoor wood-burning installations difficult. Most wood-burning saunas are installed outdoors.
