Best Outdoor Saunas for Your Backyard

Compare outdoor barrel saunas, cabin saunas, and luxury backyard sauna installations.

What to know first

An outdoor sauna turns a corner of the yard into a proper retreat. Barrel saunas are compact and efficient; cabin saunas offer more room and a conventional door; larger builds can be integrated into a backyard wellness design. Here's what to check before ordering one for delivery.

Outdoor Sauna Buying Guide

Site plans, power runs and weather — the details that decide whether an outdoor sauna is easy or difficult.

Not sure? Take the quiz
01

Barrel vs. cabin saunas

Barrel saunas are compact, heat efficiently and are typically quicker to install. Cabin saunas offer more usable interior volume, a standard door and more layout flexibility, at a higher price and footprint.

02

Site preparation

Choose a level, well-drained spot with some shelter from prevailing weather. Plan access for delivery — many saunas arrive as pre-assembled sections that must be carried or lifted into place.

03

Foundation requirements

Saunas need a solid, level base: a concrete pad, compacted gravel, decking or manufacturer-approved footings. An uneven base forces doors to bind and stresses the structure over time.

04

Electrical installation

If you choose an electric heater, plan the power run from the house. Buried conduit and an outdoor-rated circuit usually need a licensed electrician — budget for this separately from the sauna price.

05

Weather resistance

Look for timber rated for exterior use and a finish intended for outdoor conditions. Roof overhangs, door seals and ventilation design all affect how well a sauna survives years of sun and rain.

06

Ventilation

Outdoor saunas still need proper ventilation — intake and exhaust points keep air fresh and manage condensation, which matters for wood longevity.

07

Maintenance and installation costs

Expect to re-oil or refinish exterior wood periodically and to keep the roof and seals in good repair. Beyond the sauna itself, budget for the base, power run, delivery and any crane or lifting help.

Frequently asked

Do I need a permit for an outdoor sauna?+

It depends on your local jurisdiction, the sauna's size and whether power is being run to it. Check with your local building department before ordering — requirements vary widely.

Can an outdoor sauna run on a standard outlet?+

Small electric heaters may, but most outdoor saunas use a dedicated 240V circuit. Wood-burning options avoid electrical work but need a chimney and fire clearances.

What's the best base for a barrel sauna?+

A level, well-drained base — concrete pad, compacted gravel or decking per the manufacturer's instructions. The key is that it be flat and support the sauna's weight evenly.
