Running a sauna isn't free, but it's usually far cheaper than people fear — and very dependent on how often you use it. This guide explains what drives the cost and lets you calculate an estimate for your own heater.

How sauna heaters consume electricity
Electric heaters convert electricity to heat at close to 100% efficiency. The power draw is measured in kilowatts (kW). A heater rated at 6 kW draws 6 kW while its elements are on.
Once the sauna reaches temperature, the thermostat switches the elements off and on to maintain it. That cycling means the average draw is usually lower than the rated power — which is why estimates use an 'average load factor'.
Infrared sauna power consumption
Infrared cabins use smaller emitters. In our catalog, the Finnmark FD-1 is rated at 1,750 W (1.75 kW). Others may draw 2-3 kW, and some larger cabins more.
Infrared cabins tend to run at a steady, lower draw for longer sessions rather than full power in bursts.
Traditional electric sauna consumption
Traditional heaters draw much more: the Almost Heaven barrels in our catalog use a 6 kW Harvia. Larger cabins use 8-10 kW.
The higher draw is offset partly by shorter sessions and by cycling after warm-up.
Heater wattage
Always use the rated wattage from the spec sheet. If it's given in kW, it's the same number divided by 1,000 — 6 kW is 6,000 W.
Warm-up time
Warm-up matters: a traditional sauna may take 30-60 minutes to heat, which is energy spent before you step in. A smaller infrared cabin warms faster.
Thermostat cycling
A sauna spends part of its session at reduced draw as the thermostat cycles. A 60-75% average load factor is a sensible default for many electric heaters in a well-built cabin.
Doors opening, cold weather and poor insulation increase the average draw.
Session duration
Total energy is power multiplied by time. Two 30-minute sessions use the same energy as one 60-minute session at the same draw, but warm-up happens twice.
Electricity rates
Rates vary widely by region and tariff. Check the per-kWh rate on your bill — including any time-of-use tariffs. If your provider charges less overnight, a timer can make a difference.
Monthly and annual operating costs
Monthly cost is cost per session × sessions per month. Annual cost scales with sessions per year. Frequency — not the sauna type — is usually the biggest variable.
Energy efficiency considerations
- Well-insulated cabins hold heat better between cycles.
- Glass-heavy cabins lose more heat.
- A heater sized to the room is more efficient than an oversized one.
- Closing the door and avoiding frequent openings saves energy.
Ways to reduce operating expenses
- Use a timer so the sauna heats just before you need it.
- Don't overheat — a lower target temperature costs less.
- Keep the door closed during sessions.
- Use a lower-rate tariff where available.
- Shorter, more frequent sessions can suit some heaters better.
Frequently asked questions
Are infrared saunas cheaper to run than traditional saunas?+
Usually per session, because they draw less power. But session length and heater size matter, so use the calculator with your own model's figures.
How much does it cost to run a sauna per hour?+
It depends on heater power and your electricity rate. A 6 kW heater at a typical rate for an hour at full power is roughly the heater's kWh multiplied by your rate; cycling and warm-up change that.
Does leaving the door open really cost more?+
Yes. Leaving the door open lets heat escape and the heater runs longer to maintain temperature.
